Postcard 1926 White Border Old National Museum Washington DC Bel Air MD

Washington, D.C., USA1926Pre-linenFair-Good

A vintage automobile — a boxy, black sedan of mid-1920s vintage — sits parked on the broad plaza before the Old National Museum in Washington, D.C., its red-brick Romanesque Revival towers rising against a cloud-brushed sky: this is the building now known as the Arts and Industries Building of the Smithsonian Institution, completed in 1881 and one of the capital's grandest Victorian public structures. The postcard was mailed from Bel Air, Maryland in November 1926 by Myrtle and Hugh to Mr. and Mrs. Van Dutchen on Route 2 in Blossale (likely Blossvale), New York — the entire message a breezy, cheerful "Having a nice vacation." The 1-cent green Benjamin Franklin stamp is a classic of the era. Published by B.S. Reynolds Co. of Washington with CT/American Art Colored printing, card #21202, this white-border example captures the museum at the height of its interwar elegance, before the automobile era fully reshaped the Mall.
