Postcard 1930s Linen Civic Center San Francisco CA City Hall Aerial View

San Francisco, California, USA1938LinenGood

From a dramatic elevated vantage, San Francisco's Civic Center unfurls in linen-era splendor — the City Hall's gilded dome, taller than the U.S. Capitol's, anchors the composition while the formal French Renaissance plaza stretches toward the viewer in geometric flower-bed patterns of vivid red and orange, flanked by the neoclassical wings of the Public Library and Civic Auditorium, and threaded by long straight boulevards that vanish into a hillside panorama of densely packed Edwardian neighborhoods and distant brown mountains. Published by the Stanley A. Piltz Company as card No. 23 in the "Pictorial Wonderland Art-Tone Series" — a well-regarded San Francisco specialty publisher — this unused example is printed on Piltz's signature cream-bordered linen stock with satisfying color saturation. The back copy notes the Civic Center's $20,000,000 price tag and enumerates its buildings: City Hall, Public Library, Civic Auditorium, State Building, War Memorial, Opera House, and Health Center, calling it "one of the finest in the world." A handsome civic-pride document from interwar San Francisco.
