Postcard Mount Greylock Highest Mountain Massachusetts c1907 Undivided Back

Adams/North Adams area, Massachusetts, USA1907Pre-linenGood

Rising above a pastoral sweep of rolling meadows and leafy hardwoods, Mount Greylock dominates this hand-colored early-1900s view — a pale cascade of rocky slide scar splitting its dark forested flank like a lightning bolt frozen in stone. At 3,491 feet, Greylock was already a beloved destination when this card was printed, drawing literary pilgrims who knew that Thoreau had climbed it and Melville, gazing at its whale-backed silhouette from his Pittsfield study, had been inspired while writing Moby-Dick. The soft teal sky, warm green fields stitched with a split-rail fence, and the delicate hand-coloring typical of the German-printed "Gruss aus" aesthetic place this squarely in the Undivided Back or early Divided Back era, circa 1905–1910. The card was never mailed — the back is pristine, address-only format with a 1¢/2¢ stamp box — making it a clean example of Berkshire County tourism ephemera from the golden age of American postcard collecting.
