Antique & Vintage Postcards

Two gleaming early automobiles roll along a gently curving Lynn Shore Drive while a lone pedestrian strolls the waterfront promenade — and looming above it all, the grand red-brick-and-white-trim facade of "The Breakers" hotel commands six stories of seaside elegance in this beautifully preserved white-border-era card. The Breakers was one of the North Shore's premier resort hotels in the early twentieth century, catering to Boston's prosperous middle and upper classes who sought ocean breezes and sophisticated leisure just north of the city. The automobiles — open-topped, boxy, and unmistakably circa 1912–1920 — add a wonderful layer of transportation history, while the hand-applied color gives the brick a warm terracotta glow against a peachy sunset sky. The card was never used, its back carrying the ornate blue "POST CARD" cartouche and dual stamp-rate box, printed with catalog number A-98867, pointing to a major American publisher of the white-border period.
