Antique & Vintage Postcards

From high above the shimmering waters of the Vierwaldstättersee — the Lake of the Four Forest Cantons, better known in English as Lake Lucerne — the alpine village of Vitznau tumbles down its wooded hillside, its baroque church tower presiding over rooftops that spill toward the water's edge, while snow-crowned peaks of the Uri Alps loom across the lake and a pale mountain sky completes the composition. Vitznau is the lower terminus of the Rigi Railway, the world's first mountain rack railway (opened 1871), and by 1900 had become a fashionable resort stop on the Grand Tour circuit. This photograph was made by E. Goetz of Lucerne, whose crisp black-and-white photographic postcards documented the Swiss tourist landscape with exceptional clarity. The card is an undivided-back Postkarte printed in the Swiss multilingual convention (German, French, Italian), with address-only reverse — placing it before 1907. Never mailed, the card survives in clean, near-fine condition despite some foxing spots on the image face, likely from storage humidity.
