An ivy-smothered medieval fortress rises from the Dutch countryside in this atmospheric 1964 real-photo postcard of Slot Zuylen, its conical turret spires piercing a dramatic clouded sky — and behind it, a young American nursing student named Eletha was living her best summer abroad. The castle at Oud Zuilen, originally built in 1300 and elegantly modernized in 1752 by French architect Jacob Marot, is captured here in a crisp black-and-white photograph showing the steeply pitched slate roofs, round corner tower, and walls thick with climbing vines. Eletha was working at a hospital in Utrecht that summer, and writes to her recipient Marie with infectious enthusiasm: before starting work the group spent two weeks traveling through "various parts of Europe," and after the posting she planned to tour England. She notes that Dutch nursing differs markedly from American training — a small but vivid window into mid-century transatlantic medical education and student travel culture.
