Postcard Japan Traditional Inn Tatami Room Japanese Text 1920s-30s Unused

Ejima coastal area, Japan1930Pre-linenGood

Serene and spare in the manner that only true Japanese domestic architecture can achieve, this early twentieth-century photographic postcard presents the interior of a traditional Japanese inn — almost certainly a high-grade ryokan — its wide tatami-mat rooms bathed in the soft, diffuse light falling through shoji screens and opening onto a tokonoma alcove hung with a hanging scroll. A low lacquered table anchors the central room while decorative ceramics are placed with studied care in the alcove, and a glimpse through open fusuma sliding doors reveals further chambers beyond. The Japanese text at the upper portion of the card identifies the establishment as connected with the Osaka area coastal resort district of Ejima (江の島海岸), referencing modernised guest facilities and a special separate guest building (岩楼別館). The reverse, printed "Unionpostale Universelle / Carte Postale," is entirely unused, placing this card firmly in the pre-war Japanese tourism postcard tradition when ryokan imagery was produced to attract domestic and foreign visitors to Japan's celebrated hot-spring and coastal resort towns.
