Antique & Vintage Postcards

A boy leads a laden donkey across a misty Irish hillside in this evocative color-printed cover card — "Gathering Turf in the Irish Hills," with a verse by Eva Brennan: "There's a spell about the brown bog / Although 'tis lonesome too / But the hearts that love the brown bog / Are Irish hearts and true." The greeting reads "Good Luck from Carrickfergus," the ancient walled port town on Belfast Lough in County Antrim, Northern Ireland, steeped in history from its 12th-century Norman castle to its connection with the traditional Irish song. This is a Valentine & Sons "Mailing Novelty" — raise the flap on the cover and a descending accordion of black-and-white real photographic-style prints tumbles out, depicting: the seafront promenade, the North Gate arch of Carrickfergus's medieval town walls, a street scene, Shaftesbury Park with its ornamental pond and children at play, the atmospheric Lovers' Lane lined with tall conifers, and further townscape views. Published by Valentine & Sons, Ltd., Dundee and London — the premier British postcard publisher of the Edwardian era — and printed in Great Britain; the back notes "Shape Passed by G.P.O. for 1d Postage Rate" and "Printed Paper Mailing Novelty," No. 578. The card is unused with no stamp affixed, in good condition with light age toning.
