Postcard 1930s Edgartown Bathing Beach Martha's Vineyard MA Albertype

Edgartown, Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts, USA1932Pre-linenExcellent

Sun-seekers in period swimwear, straw hats, and beach umbrellas dot the broad sandy shore of Edgartown Bathing Beach on Martha's Vineyard in this charming black-and-white Albertype postcard from the 1930s — a snapshot of American leisure culture at a resort destination that has been drawing summer visitors since the 19th century. Edgartown, the island's oldest town and former whaling capital, is glimpsed across the calm harbor in the background, its white clapboard houses and church spires forming a quintessential New England skyline. The Albertype Company of Brooklyn, New York — one of the most respected American postcard printers of the era, known for their fine collotype halftone process — published this card for the Edgartown Drug Co., the island's local distributor. The card was never mailed and remains in excellent unused condition with crisp edges and strong tonal contrast.
