Antique & Vintage Postcards

Bathed in soft celadon and cream tones, the handsome Neoclassical Public Library of Lynn, Massachusetts stands proud beneath leafy summer trees in this early divided-back postcard — two small figures seated on the iron fence in the foreground lend an intimate, unhurried scale to the columned granite façade that Lynn's citizens dedicated in 1900. The library, designed in the Beaux-Arts tradition with Ionic columns and tall arched windows, still serves the city today, making this postcard a pleasing then-and-now artifact. Postmarked March 22 (year partially legible, consistent with 1910–1912 era) from Lynn, Massachusetts, the card was addressed to a Mrs. W.F. Glasser — first name not given — originally at Newfoundland, New Jersey, then redirected in pencil to 161 Mill Street, Paterson, New Jersey. The brief message, signed by "Em. Eaton," reads: "Have just returned from a convalescence. Sincerely yours." Printed and published by N.E. Paper & Stationery Co., Ayer, Massachusetts — a regional publisher whose cards are less commonly encountered than major national houses. A 1¢ green Washington stamp (Scott #331 or similar) is affixed and cancelled.
