Antique & Vintage Postcards

On New Year's Day 1972, a writer named Bill dashed off a wry holiday greeting from Eastover Resort in the Berkshires — crowded onto the slopes with "over 300 others" for a beginner ski lesson on the broad flat practice slope below the resort's famous glass-enclosed heated pool. The chrome card captures roughly twenty students in a neat line, their colorful parkas popping against the white snow, a softly rounded Berkshire hill rising blue-grey behind them and a red barn anchoring the middle distance — a perfectly composed New England winter idyll. Eastover, a sprawling Lenox estate-turned-resort, was a fixture of the Berkshires social scene through the 1960s and 70s; Bill's deadpan aside — "do hope every thing went well while Madam was in residence" — hints at some domestic comedy unfolding back in Hadlyme, Connecticut. Addressed to "The Erash Page" (a family or household nickname) at Brendon Hall, Hadlyme, Conn., the card carries an 8¢ Eisenhower stamp, neatly tied.
