Antique & Vintage Postcards

Gleaming cars from the early jet age fill the parking lot of the Plaza Motel in this vibrant chrome postcard, capturing mid-century roadside America at its most optimistic — the sweeping neon "Plaza Motel" sign, the tidy brick motor court, and the promise of Route 1 convenience just 15 miles north of Boston. An inset panel reveals the interior: twin beds draped in gold spreads, a boxy television console, yellow armchairs, and wall-to-wall carpet — every amenity breathlessly listed on the reverse, including individual thermostats and soundproof rooms. The card touts proximity to what was then billed as the "world's largest shopping center," almost certainly the Northshore Shopping Center in Peabody, which opened in 1958. Published by Tichnor Bros. of Boston, a legendary New England postcard house, this is a quintessential piece of Massachusetts motel-era nostalgia for Route 1 corridor and roadside Americana collectors.
