Postcard 1960s Chrome Hartman's Restaurant Springfield MA Route 20 Ludlow

Springfield/Ludlow, Massachusetts, USA1962ChromeFair-Good

A sun-drenched Spanish Colonial Revival façade greets travelers pulling off Route 20 near Ludlow — this chrome-era advertising card captures Hartman's Restaurant at its mid-century prime, its white stucco walls, terra-cotta tile roofline, and burgundy awnings radiating the confident glamour of postwar New England dining. The parking lot stretches broad and empty in the foreground, the kind of sweeping asphalt apron that said "we expect a crowd." Hartman's billed itself as "The Finest Eating Place in New England," a bold claim printed right on the card back alongside its Springfield, Mass. address and telephone exchange Li-3-1277. This particular card made the journey — postmarked and stamped — bearing a handwritten note in looping blue ink addressed to Sadie on Emerald Street in Athol, Massachusetts. The sender describes a Thursday morning meal and travel plans, giving the card a warm, slice-of-life intimacy that lifts it well above the average restaurant promotional piece. The 4¢ Lincoln stamp (Scott #1036) ties the mailing firmly to the early 1960s.
