Antique & Vintage Postcards

Gleaming bar rail, neatly lined spirit bottles, and a curve of padded barstools — this intimate linen-era postcard from the Pioneer Lounge at Wiggins Old Tavern and Hotel Northampton captures the streamlined Art Deco hospitality aesthetic of 1940s New England in a single evocative frame. Hotel Northampton, a Northampton, Massachusetts landmark since 1927, incorporated the storied Wiggins Old Tavern — a colonial-era hospitality institution originally established in the eighteenth century — and branded itself "An Inn of Colonial Charm," a slogan printed in elegant script on the card's unused reverse. The Pioneer Lounge shown here reflects the post-Prohibition confidence of American hotel bar design: clean wood panelling, recessed lighting, and an L-shaped bar perfectly scaled for the steady stream of Smith College visitors, business travellers, and local society figures who made Hotel Northampton a social anchor of the Pioneer Valley for decades. The card was never mailed and retains its original freshness.
