Antique & Vintage Postcards

Glowing like a lantern above the Charles River, the Newton, Massachusetts Marriott Motor Hotel shimmers in this dramatic nighttime chrome postcard — the building's warm amber light doubles in perfect reflection off the still water below, framed by silhouetted overhanging branches that give the scene an almost painterly quality. This is the Marriott at Commonwealth Ave. at Route 128 and the Massachusetts Turnpike, a flagship property that boasted 433 guest rooms, 28 elegant suites, a Health Club, sauna, indoor and outdoor pools, the Fairfield Inn, Sirloin & Saddle restaurants, and the Windjammer Lounge — the full mid-century motor hotel dream rendered in glass and steel. A handwritten note on the back reads simply "This is living, this is Marriott Motor Hotels," a phrase that doubles as both personal testimony and unintentional advertising copy. Never mailed, this card survives in unposted condition, crisp enough to convey the optimism of the early Marriott brand before it became the global giant we know today.
