Antique & Vintage Postcards

Sun-drenched and vivid, this linen-era view of the Band Shell at Daytona Beach's "World's Wonder Beach" glows with the saturated yellows and reds that made 1940s Florida postcards irresistible souvenirs — manicured gardens, red-tiled pavilions, and the great arched band shell frame a glimpse of the Atlantic beyond, the Stars and Stripes snapping in the sea breeze. Sent in July 1947, the card carries a charming personal note from a vacationer named Rob to his mother back in Louisville, Kentucky: "Had a nice time yesterday. This is a nice place to spend a vacation; the people are very nice. Last night we heard pretty music. We are going to Miami Monday." The Daytona Beach Band Shell, built in 1937 as a WPA project, was a beloved community venue for decades and the scene of countless summer concerts that Rob and his companions enjoyed on that warm July evening. The card was postmarked July 2, 1947, at Daytona Beach, and mailed to Mrs. Mary V. W. at 135 Pennsylvania Ave., Louisville, Ky.
