Antique & Vintage Postcards

Stretching to the horizon in a sweeping aerial panorama, Daytona Beach in 1954 reveals its legendary 500-foot-wide hard-packed sand — cars parked directly on the beach, the old pier jutting into the Atlantic, and the curve of the Halifax River glinting in the distance — a view that encapsulates the era when Daytona was simultaneously America's playground and its premier natural motorsports venue. Written in the languid heat of a July vacation, the sender named Jacky dashed off a note to Ralph in Canton, Illinois: "Boy it is melldown here. Am tanned already. Water tastes terrible but it can't be beat. See you soon." The 2¢ Adams stamp — part of the Presidential Series — helped carry the card on its journey postmarked Daytona Beach, Jul 23, 1954. The aerial perspective and the hand-written date "7/23/54" add a precise time-capsule quality rarely found on generic beach views.
