Antique & Vintage Postcards

Under swaying Florida palms and a brilliant blue linen sky, horse number 12 — captioned with a wry "A Strong Stretch Runner" — stands posed with jockey and groom at a Miami racing venue in this colorful linen-era novelty card, its title "A Miami 'Long Shot'" playing on both the racing underdog and the warm-weather gamble of a Florida winter holiday. What transforms this humble racing souvenir into something more is its back: postmarked Miami, February 21, 1941, the message is from a pair of newlyweds — Marcella and Joe — thanking a couple named "Mr. and Mrs. L.J." in Baytown, Texas, for their help with the wedding and reception, adding with honeymoon glee, "This surely is a lovely place."
