Antique & Vintage Postcards

Draped in ivy and crowned with Gothic spires, Trinity Episcopal Church in Columbia, South Carolina commands its corner lot in this luminous hand-colored postcard from around 1915, the churchyard's iron fence and marble crosses lending the scene an air of quiet, Southern permanence. Founded in 1812 and rebuilt after General Sherman's troops burned much of Columbia in 1865, Trinity is one of the most historically resonant churches in the American South — a survivor of the Civil War whose elegant Gothic Revival façade, completed in the 1870s, became a symbol of the city's resilience. The warm amber sky and lush canopy of mature oaks give the image a painterly quality typical of Southern Post Card Co.'s "Quality" series, published out of Asheville, North Carolina. The card is unused and retains strong, unfaded color.
