Antique & Vintage Postcards

A proud grower in a grey suit and wide-brimmed hat stands beside a four-year-old grapefruit tree so laden with golden fruit it nearly obscures him — a powerful sales pitch in postcard form for the booming Rio Grande Valley land market of the 1920s and 1930s, when promoters promised buyers that no other region in the United States could coax fruit from such young trees. Published by Gardner's Studio out of Harlingen and printed in the C.T. American Art Colored linen style by Curt Teich of Chicago, this card is a vivid artifact of the aggressive agricultural land-promotion campaigns that transformed the South Texas brush country into one of America's most productive citrus belts. The tree's slogan printed on the reverse — "Care for Us 4 Years and We Take Care of You the Rest of Your Life" — reads as equal parts agricultural fact and Depression-era reassurance.
