Antique & Vintage Postcards

Two figures glide out from under the trailing curtain of a weeping willow in a wooden rowboat on the glassy lagoon of Washington Park — El Paso's beloved municipal retreat — while a half-dozen other boats rest at the dock in this luminous hand-colored Litho-Chrome card printed in Germany and mailed on March 5, 1908. The sender, who signs simply as Smith, dashes off a cheerful note to a friend named Jody in Chickasha, Oklahoma, reporting their whereabouts and excitedly mentioning that they go to a bullfight every Sunday — a reminder of El Paso's proximity to Ciudad Juárez and the cross-border leisure culture of the era. The card traveled through two postmarks: El Paso (March 5, 1908, 11:30 AM) and Chickasha (March 19, 1908), and carries a used 1-cent Benjamin Franklin green stamp.
