Love to Daddy — Herman." The card is addressed to a Mr. Herman at Proctor Hospital, Room 338, Peoria, Illinois — a father lying in a hospital bed, receiving this small painted rectangle of comfort from his child. The image itself is the Golden Temple of Jehol, an exact reproduction of a 1767 Chinese Lama temple reassembled from 28,000 interlocking pieces and covered in $25,000 worth of 23-karat gold leaf, one of the most celebrated architectural showpieces of the Fair. Swedish explorer Dr. Sven Hedin selected it as the finest existing example of Chinese Lama architecture. The postmark is from Peoria's South Adams Street Station, and the 1¢ Franklin green stamp anchors it firmly in the early 1930s.
