Antique & Vintage Postcards

Massive and monumental against a cobalt Australian sky, Melbourne's Shrine of Remembrance looms in this vivid chrome-era postcard photographed by E. Ludwig for the renowned John Hinde Studios — the pyramid-capped sanctuary of Donnybrook granite rises like an ancient ziggurat above manicured lawns, its Doric colonnade and relief-carved pediment evoking the Parthenon and the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus simultaneously. Dedicated in 1934 to honor Victorians who fell in World War I, and later expanded with a Forecourt in 1953 for World War II commemoration, the Shrine sits at the heart of the King's Domain parkland adjacent to St. Kilda Road — one of the most visited war memorials in the Southern Hemisphere. John Hinde Limited, the Irish publisher famous for their saturated Cibachrome-style color photography, produced this card (catalog no. 2AUS 36) for distribution by P.H.H. Ltd., Hawthorn, Victoria — placing production most likely in the early-to-mid 1970s. The card is unused, unposted, and in excellent condition with no fading.
