Antique & Vintage Postcards

Sun, sand, and a cheerful culture shock — this vivid chrome-era aerial-perspective beach card from Perth, Western Australia, shows hundreds of sunbathers and swimmers packed onto a brilliant white beach with a turquoise enclosed swimming lagoon, circa 1989, when Perth was riding the wave of the America's Cup afterglow and a boom in expatriate arrivals. The message on the reverse, written by Den, Diane, and Jason, is a gem of period voice: "G'Day Mates! How's everything? Well, we've been here six weeks now — what a pain — summer weather, sunshine, beaches, good beer. These people just don't know how joyful Kansas can be! Seriously, we were very lucky & found a place to live right across the street from the beach. Diane really loves it, Jason likes school and I don't mind working too much. We're seeing a lot of great things — trying to take in as much as we can. Lots of Pollocks here — they all drive on the wrong side of the road!" The card was sent via Air Mail to Tom and Ann at 220 Robin Hill Dr, Naperville, IL 60540, with an Australian 75¢ "Living Together" commemorative stamp, postmarked Wannanup (or similar), March 1989.
