Antique & Vintage Postcards

Three rosy-cheeked children burst through a doorway in a flurry of white muffs, holly sprigs, and Christmas parcels — the tallest in a wide-brimmed straw hat and blue coat, the smallest a pudgy toddler in red hood and white bundle coat, all three radiating the barely-contained joy of Christmas morning. This is from Raphael Tuck & Sons' celebrated "Joyous Children" Christmas series, printed in Saxony under their coveted Royal Appointment to King and Queen — a mark of prestige that made Tuck's cards the most collectible of the Edwardian era. The card traveled from Youngstown, Ohio on December 23, 1914 — just months into World War I — carrying a cheerful "Xmas love from Cousin Carrie" to Miss Adelaide Carroll at 3749 East 71st Street in Cleveland. The 1¢ Washington stamp (Series of 1912–14) franked this festive courier for a single cent.
