Postcard 1951 RPPC Rockery Gardens Pavilion Bournemouth England Worthing

Bournemouth, England, UK1951RPPCGood

Cascading water tumbles over artfully arranged rockery stones beside an arched stone bridge in this crisp real-photo postcard of the Rockery Gardens and Pavilion at Bournemouth, on England's southern coast — one of the Edwardian resort town's most beloved civic showpieces, captured here in the early 1950s with the gleaming Art Deco Pavilion concert hall visible behind. The Bournemouth Pavilion, opened in 1929, became a centerpiece of the town's identity as a refined seaside destination; its formal gardens were designed to impress visitors arriving from the promenade. Scrawled in blue ink in an energetic hand, the message was posted from Worthing, Sussex on 9 September 1951 — the writer, who signs with the initial "M," addresses the card to a Mrs. Zimmermann at 2 Highfield Road, Edgbaston, Birmingham, noting she is staying at Fernbank on Seatlucke Road and has looked at a room, expressing hope that travel will go safely. The human detail of a traveler scouting accommodations while sending greetings adds warmth to this seaside scene.
