A warm February evening in 1938, and someone named Sadie has rushed to Houston's Jefferson Davis Hospital only to arrive too late — her handwritten message on this Art Deco linen card carries the quiet devastation of a deathbed missed, a burial already done, and a road trip to Waco still ahead. The card's lithographed front showcases the hospital's soaring Out Patient & Ward Building in cream and terracotta, its stepped massing a textbook example of Depression-era institutional architecture designed by Houston architect A. C. Finn, who also designed the San Jacinto Monument. The building opened in 1937 and served Houston's charity patients for decades before becoming the landmark now known as the historic JD Hospital campus. On the reverse, Sadie's looping cursive tells Mr. and Mrs. Will Stringer of Port Huron, Michigan that she "arrived here and found every—" the postmark nearly swallowing her words, "but Jack killed—I knew as soon as I see him he could not last long, he died last evening—was buried Tuesday morning. Stella was in Waco…the weather is lovely, planter gardens, flowers all in bloom, feeling fine, going to Stella and going home. Sadie."
