Antique & Vintage Postcards

Gleaming white under a pale blue sky, the Navarro County Courthouse in Corsicana, Texas dominates this hand-colored early postcard view — a proud monument to civic ambition in a Texas oil-boom town, its Beaux-Arts columns and central clock tower announcing prosperity to all comers. The courthouse, built in 1905 to designs by architect James Riely Gordon in a commanding Renaissance Revival style, stands on a rise with a Confederate soldier statue visible at center left, testament to the region's post-Civil War memorial culture. Corsicana was the site of Texas's first major oil discovery in 1894, and by the time this card was published the town was flush with petroleum wealth. Published exclusively for Duke & Ayres Nickel Stores — one of the five-and-dime variety-store chains that helped distribute regional postcard views across small-town America — this unposted example carries a price penciled in as "1½¢" and the catalog number A-44660. The reverse was never written on or mailed, preserving the card in excellent original condition.
