Antique & Vintage Postcards

Jagged granite spires of the Sawtooth Range loom cathedral-like over the mirror-still surface of Alice Lake in this richly saturated linen-era card, the deep pine-green forest ringing the shoreline punctuated by splashes of autumnal amber and the white tongues of lingering snowfields — a wilderness scene so unspoiled it reads almost as myth. Produced by E. C. Kropp Co. of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, one of the premier American linen postcard publishers of the 1930s–50s, this card bears catalog number 14708 and was printed using Kropp's signature "Natural Color" process, which gave linen cards their characteristically vivid, slightly artificial palette beloved by collectors today. Alice Lake sits in what was then described on the card back as Idaho's Primitive Area — now the Frank Church–River of No Return Wilderness — "set apart to preserve for future generations an unspoiled sample of Nature's handicraft." The card was never mailed, retaining its fresh, unwritten back and bright front colors.
