Birmingham Corporation Street Busy Street Scene England Postcard 1951

Birmingham, England, UK1951Real Photo (RPPC)Used
Real photo postcard (RPPC) by Photochrom Co. Ltd., Graphic Studios, Tunbridge Wells, Kent — catalog number 84506. Elevated view looking north along Corporation Street, Birmingham city centre, c.1950. The street is densely packed with pre-war and early postwar motor traffic including double-decker buses, Austin and Morris saloon cars, delivery vehicles, and pedestrians. Victorian and Edwardian commercial buildings line both sides; a "Parsons" store sign is visible mid-left. One of the finest surviving street-scene images of Birmingham in the immediate postwar era. Published by Photochrom Co. Ltd. Postmarked Birmingham — 12 [August?] 1951, W.D.O. cancel. Message in German addressed: "Liebe Oma! Einen recht herzlichen Gruss aus Birmingh[am]. sendet Dir Wilma!" with personal observations comparing Birmingham traffic to conditions at home ("Bohnen- und der Melonen-Allee"). Addressed to Eliese Heitzmann, Rüsselsheim/Main, 10 Kürbisstrasse, Germany U.S. Zone — postwar divided Germany.
