Postcard 1863 Presbyterian Church Gettysburg PA Lincoln Pew Linen c1940s

Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, USA1940LinenExcellent

On the morning of November 19, 1863 — the very day he would deliver the Gettysburg Address — Abraham Lincoln entered this brick Presbyterian church arm-in-arm with John Burns, the elderly civilian hero of the Battle of Gettysburg, and took his seat in a plain wooden box pew that would become one of America's most quietly venerated historical relics. This vivid linen-era card presents both the handsome Romanesque-arched exterior, bathed in a warm sunset palette of tangerine and teal so beloved by mid-century linen printers, and an inset photograph of the actual pew Lincoln occupied — its simple dark woodwork made extraordinary by association. The congregation was founded in 1740 and the building erected in 1842; it also served as a field hospital during and after the three-day battle. Published by L.E. Smith of Gettysburg and printed by the celebrated Tichnor Brothers of Boston, this unused card is a compelling intersection of Civil War history and Americana ephemera that appeals to Lincoln collectors, Civil War buffs, and Pennsylvania topographical enthusiasts alike.
