Postcard 1938 Nikolsburg Moravia Czech RPPC Mikulov Castle Town Panorama

Mikulov (Nikolsburg), Czech Republic (formerly Niederdonau, Greater Germany)1940RPPCExcellent

Perched dramatically above a medieval roofscape, the great Dietrichstein palace-castle of Nikolsburg dominates this rare real-photo panorama — a city frozen in the final years before the Sudetenland crisis swept it into the Third Reich. The wide-angle view captures the Baroque St. Wenceslas Church tower rising from the dense tile-roofed townscape, the twin-domed Piarist Church visible to the right, and the ruins of the old fortification crowning the ridge beyond. Nikolsburg (today Mikulov, Czech Republic) had been a major centre of Moravian Jewish scholarship — home to the legendary Rabbi Shmelke — and a key wine-trading town on the Austro-Hungarian border. This "Echte Fotografie" (genuine photograph) card was published by Franz Mörtl of Vienna's 19th district, catalogue number C/2256, and carries the handwritten collector number "4" in the upper-right corner of the reverse. The undivided message area and clean silver-gelatin surface suggest the card was kept as a souvenir rather than posted — a poignant keepsake of a world about to vanish.
