Postcard c1910 Kurort Meran Austria Passer River Stone Bridge Colorized

Merano (Meran), South Tyrol, Austria (now Italy)1910Pre-linenGood

The turquoise rush of the River Passer surges beneath a handsome Roman-arch stone bridge at Merano (Meran), the famed Alpine spa resort then under Austro-Hungarian rule — a destination so fashionable that emperors and empresses took the cure here among its chestnut promenades and mild microclimate. This richly hand-tinted card captures the Gilf Promenade bridge with the terraced white villas of the resort climbing the wooded hillside above, their red-tiled roofs glowing against a theatrical blue-sky backdrop. Boulders tumble along the near riverbank, and lush green canopy frames the scene on both sides, evoking the sense of sheltered, aristocratic leisure that made Meran one of the most storied spas of the Belle Époque. On the reverse, a flowing German script in the old Kurrent hand — addressed to Frau Johanna, wife of a k.k. (Imperial-Royal) Major, at Günnergasse 15, Vienna III — carries what appears to be a social note, possibly from a spa-visiting acquaintance. The stamp is an Austro-Hungarian 5 Heller Franz Joseph I green issue, postmarked around 1910, making this a textbook example of Dual Monarchy postal ephemera at its most elegant.
