Postcard 1900s Thomas Becket's Palace Tarring West Sussex Valentine's Series

Tarring (Worthing), West Sussex, England1908Pre-linenGood

Roughcast flint-and-rubble walls rise in the pale winter light at Thomas à Becket's Palace in Tarring, West Sussex — one of England's most evocative and overlooked medieval survivals, reputedly visited by the Archbishop of Canterbury himself in the 12th century, though historians debate his direct connection to this particular structure. The photograph captures the squat, honest vernacular of the building with its stone-mullioned windows, twin chimneys, and mossy slate roof, framed against the sky with the quiet authority of genuine antiquity. Published by Valentine's Series — the Dundee giant of British postcard publishing whose output defined Edwardian topographical collecting — this example from their standard photographic range bears a handwritten address to a "Philp" at "Trelawney," Weybridge, Surrey, but carries no message and apparently no stamp, suggesting it may have been hand-delivered or placed in an envelope. The Valentine's British Manufacture guarantee mark appears prominently.
