Postcard c1904 Ann Hathaway's Cottage Bedstead Shottery Frith's Series UK

Shottery, Stratford-upon-Avon, United Kingdom1905Pre-linenGood

A hushed, intimate glimpse into Shakespearean England — this real-photograph postcard by the venerable F. Frith & Co. captures the ancient carved-oak bedstead inside Ann Hathaway's Cottage at Shottery, near Stratford-upon-Avon, the very room where the young William Shakespeare would have courted the woman he married in 1582. The sepia-toned image reveals the heavy, intricately turned four-poster bed frame with its canopy rail, the ornately panelled oak wainscoting behind, a low beamed ceiling, and a simple rush-seated chair to the right — all bathed in the atmospheric dimness of a medieval farmhouse interior. F. Frith & Co. of Reigate, one of Victorian and Edwardian England's foremost postcard and photographic publishers, assigned this image catalogue number 11543B. The reverse carries the elegant "Frith's Series" back design, printed in Saxony, with instructions to affix a halfpenny stamp — placing production firmly in the Edwardian era before the 1918 postage increase. Ann Hathaway's Cottage remains one of the most visited literary heritage sites in England, and Frith images of its interior are perennially collected.
