Postcard Pool of London Vicat Cole Tate Gallery Pre-Linen Photochrom c1905

London, England1905Pre-linenGood

Tall-masted sailing ships jostle with steam-powered tugs on a slate-grey Thames in this atmospheric Photochrom reproduction of The Pool of London by Victorian painter Vicat Cole — a canvas that captured the river at the very peak of its commercial might, before the great docks fell silent. Rust-red sails billow in the foreground while the dome of St Paul's Cathedral ghosts through coal smoke on the horizon, placing every vessel in unmistakable London geography. Printed in Switzerland by the Photochrom Co. of London, this "Famous Picture Series" card was issued under the divided-back rules that came into force in Britain in 1902, and the stamp-box instructions — ½d inland, 1d foreign — date it confidently to the Edwardian era. The card was never used, preserving crisp tonal gradients that showcase Photochrom's celebrated stone-lithography colour process at its finest.
