Antique & Vintage Postcards

Against the stark volcanic moonscape of Haleakalā crater, a rare and otherworldly silversword plant (Argyroxiphium sandwicense) explodes into its once-in-a-lifetime bloom — a towering spike of amber and rust-colored flowers rising from a silver rosette of bayonet leaves, one of nature's most dramatic and fleeting spectacles found only on the high-altitude slopes of Maui and the Big Island. This posted chrome card was mailed on Saturday, August 21 — postmarked August 1967 — by Mary, who wrote enthusiastically to Mr. and Mrs. A. H. Williams of Portsmouth, Virginia, describing a wonderful trip: "We are having a most fine and seeing lots of interesting things. Arrived in Honolulu late yesterday, the fourth island we have visited. The flowers are lovely. Wish everyone I know could be along." Published by Hawaiian Views (distributed by Mac Barger & Sons, Honolulu) and printed by Colourpicture Publishers of Boston, Massachusetts. A warm, well-traveled card in good used condition.
