Postcard 1913 Dutch Children Christmas Wheelbarrow Embossed Bergman Humor

Amsterdam, New York, USA1913Pre-linenFair-Good

A whimsical Pennsylvania Dutch–dialect Christmas greeting leaps off this cream-textured embossed card, postmarked December 23, 1913, from Amsterdam, New York — someone named "Guess from whom" sent it to Helen at 51 Academy Street just two days before Christmas. The illustrated front shows two cartoon Dutch children in wooden clogs: a boy in a green cap and red neckerchief pushes a wooden wheelbarrow loaded with holly and a bundled sack, while a wide-bonneted girl rides along. Above them a kitchen shelf holds a blue plate, pink teapot, and yellow vase. The punny verse reads, "May you haf mutch choy ven Christmas rolls 'round alreadty" — a charming mock-Pennsylvania Dutch accent that was enormously popular in the early novelty postcard trade. Published by Bergman (© by Bergman, visible lower left), catalog number 7002, this card is part of a well-documented humor series that commands consistent collector interest among holiday and Bergman enthusiasts alike.
