Postcard 1952 RPPC Grindelwald Eisgrotte Glacier Cave Switzerland Jackie Jack

Grindelwald, Switzerland1952RPPCGood

Dated August 31, 1952 in Jackie's own hand, this real-photo postcard pulls the viewer into the raw, crevassed mouth of the Grindelwald glacier's ice grotto — a dark arch of ancient blue ice framed by jagged seracs, meltwater pooling at its base, and the Wetterhorn's rocky spire piercing the sky above. Jackie writes to the Bauers in Buffalo: "We rode up near this glacier today on a chair lift & had lunch at 7,100 feet. This is beautiful country & wonderful food. Expect to be in England next week." The card was posted from what appears to be Heidelberg with a West German 20-pfennig postal horn stamp — an evocative detail suggesting a wider European grand tour. Published by Photoglob-Wehrli & Vouga of Zürich (catalog #1082), one of Switzerland's most respected RPPC and photographic postcard houses, this card captures the Grindelwald Eisgrotte when it was dramatically larger than today — a poignant document of glacial retreat over seven decades.
