Chrome-era aerial postcard of the Kauai Surf Hotel at Kalapaki Beach, Lihue, Kauai — the modern multi-story concrete hotel tower commanding a headland above a golden crescent beach, with the lush pineapple and sugarcane fields of the interior spreading behind it and the turquoise water of Nawiliwili Bay curving in the foreground. The Kauai Surf opened July 1, 1960 as the first major resort on Kauai, developed by Inter-Island Resorts on former ranch land that had hosted Queen Liliuokalani for a grand luau in 1891; guests were handed insecticide with their room keys because the architect had miscalculated how high mosquitoes could fly. It was the beginning of Kauai tourism as an industry — the Westin replaced it in 1987, the Marriott in 1995, but the original tower still stands.
