Chrome-era aerial postcard of Lake Willoughby in Westmore, Vermont — the long glacial lake stretching south between sheer cliff faces of Mount Pisgah on the left and Mount Hor on the right, the water a deep saturated blue, mountains rolling away to the horizon beyond the lake's southern outlet. Carved by glaciers more than 12,000 years ago and plunging over 300 feet deep, Willoughby has been compared to a Swiss lake and a Norwegian fjord; it is the deepest lake entirely enclosed within Vermont and a designated National Natural Landmark. A traveler named Jane mailed this in August 1961, reporting a day of adventurous driving — up into Canada, across into the northernmost part of New Hampshire to the Connecticut Lakes, and back to swim at Willoughby in the morning.
