Antique & Vintage Postcards

A blaze of mid-century neon electrifies the Las Vegas night — the Overland Hotel, The Mint, Hotel Fremont, Bingo Monte Carlo, and the Golden sign all compete for eyeballs along Fremont Street, captured here in a dazzling chrome-era shot looking east from Main Street. The cars crowding the boulevard are straight out of 1959, the year this card was postmarked September 11 in Las Vegas, Nevada. On the back, a traveller named Marie dashed off an irresistible note to Cora in Girard, Ohio: "I sure have to get Evelyn out of this place. She sure is a gambler. We just walked on this street." — a snapshot of real American life at the dawn of Vegas's golden age, when Fremont Street was the beating heart of gambling culture before the Strip took over.
