Postcard 1960s Quechee Gorge Vermont Bridge Ottauquechee River Chrome

Quechee, Vermont, USA1962ChromeGood

Autumn fire blazes in orange and crimson along the sheer granite walls of Quechee Gorge as the Ottauquechee River churns white over boulders far below, and a graceful steel highway bridge arches 165 feet overhead against a brilliant blue October sky — one of the most dramatic natural spectacles in all of New England, captured here in a Plastichrome chrome postcard of extraordinary color depth by photographer Don Sieburg. Vermont's deepest gorge, carved over millennia through hard Devonian schist, had by the 1960s become one of the state's most photographed roadside attractions, easily reached via Route 4 just east of Woodstock, drawing leaf-peepers and geology enthusiasts alike. This card was never mailed, and a penciled "EL 1–" dealer notation on the reverse suggests it passed through a collectibles shop at some point after its retail life at a Vermont roadside stand.
