Postcard 1900s Engelberg Switzerland UDB Panorama Alpine Valley Town View

Engelberg, Obwalden, Switzerland1902Pre-linenFair-Good

Snow-capped Alpine peaks loom over the tightly clustered rooftops of Engelberg in this evocative early undivided-back card — the great Benedictine monastery, rebuilt in grand baroque style after the fire of 1729, spreads its long white facade across the valley floor while jagged snow-streaked ridgelines fill the sky above. Engelberg, nestled in the Canton of Obwalden at 1,000 metres elevation, was already a fashionable destination for Victorian mountaineers and tubercular convalescents when this card was printed, its monastery drawing pilgrims and its glaciers drawing climbers. The publisher's credit at lower left reads partially as "Dr. Trenkler" or similar Leipzig-era lithography house. The reverse is a classic pre-1905 Swiss trilingual format — "Postkarte / Carte postale / Cartolina postale / Nur für die Adresse" — with French and Italian margin notes, consistent with Universal Postal Union era printing. The entire back was reserved for the address only, meaning any message had to be crowded onto the picture side.
