Postcard 1906 Glarus Klöntalersee Switzerland Alpine Lake Boat Austria Stamp

Glarus, Canton of Glarus, Switzerland1906Pre-linenGood

Two tiny figures drift in a dark wooden rowboat at the exact centre of the Klöntalersee, their reflections perfectly mirrored in the glassy alpine water while the vast limestone faces of the Glarus Alps rise on both sides into a pale sky — a composition so naturally symmetrical it could be a Romantic painting, yet it was captured by a camera lens sometime before August 1906, when this card was posted from Arnsdorf. The Klöntalersee, a moraine-dammed glacial lake in the canton of Glarus, Switzerland, was already a celebrated scenic destination by the turn of the century, its still waters and dramatic encircling peaks drawing hikers and artists alike. The sepia photographic reproduction is exquisite, the detail in the rock faces and the subtle tonal gradation of the reflections showing the care of a skilled printer. On the reverse, a friend named Hermann writes in warm, densely packed German script from Arnsdorf on August 24, 1906, to Hans at 524 N. Olden Avenue, Trenton, New Jersey — a transatlantic friendship bridge between an Austrian village and an immigrant community in industrial-era New Jersey. Two 5 Heller Franz Joseph I stamps frank the card for international postage, their grey-blue profiles crisp against the cream stock.
