Postcard 1960s LA Farmers Market Chrome Greetings Chinese Kitchen California

Los Angeles, California, USA1966ChromeGood

The legendary Farmers' Market at Third and Fairfax in Los Angeles buzzes with postwar energy in this vivid chrome card — a woman in a red dress orders at the Chinese Kitchen counter, shoppers browse Pace's News Stand packed with magazines, and smartly dressed Angelenos linger over meals at outdoor tables under striped awnings, with Ira's Ice Cream visible at the far right. Flossie, writing to "Cele" (Cecelia) in Bloomfield, New Jersey, couldn't be more delighted: "Still full of yummy type goodies. The 'Unstuffy Stationary Man' is still here (remember?) so I just ordered you and me some writing paper. Beautiful hot sunny day." Sent via Air Mail with a 6-cent Roosevelt stamp, the card captures the Farmers' Market at the height of its mid-century golden age, years before the adjacent Grove shopping center transformed the neighborhood. The charming personal detail about "the Unstuffy Stationary Man" — a vendor apparently known to both Flossie and Cecelia — gives this card irresistible human warmth.
