Postcard 1918 Orange Groves Snow Capped Mountains California Pre-Linen Mailed

Los Angeles, California, USA1918Pre-linenFair-Good

Sent from Los Angeles in March of 1918 — while the Great War still raged in Europe — this hand-colored early postcard glows with the impossible abundance of a California orange grove, heavy-laden trees framing a dirt path that leads the eye toward snow-draped peaks shimmering in the distance. The image is a classic of California promotional postcard iconography: the juxtaposition of citrus warmth and alpine snow was a deliberate advertisement for the Southern California dream, widely distributed during the land boom era. Published by Van Ornum Colorprint Co. of Los Angeles, the card was mailed on March 2, 1918, postmarked Los Angeles, CA, addressed to Miss Catharine in Cleveland, Ohio. The handwritten message on the back is dense and warmly chatty, mentioning "nice valley" and "Carrolls" among readable passages, offering a vivid personal glimpse into civilian life during wartime. The 2¢ red Washington stamp is a period-correct franking for the era.
