Antique & Vintage Postcards

A burst of Depression-era color fills this Stanley Piltz linen card: a long sidewalk arcade of flower stalls blazes with chrysanthemums, dahlias, carnations, and lilies along a downtown San Francisco street corner, a gentleman in a brown overcoat pausing to select blooms while fashionably dressed women in cloche hats and fur-trimmed coats stroll past, vintage automobiles — including what appears to be a Rolls-Royce or luxury touring car — lining the curb behind them. San Francisco's downtown flower stands, fed by the extraordinary productivity of the Bay Region's nurseries, were an institution beloved by locals and tourists alike, and Stanley A. Piltz built a successful publishing business around such quintessentially San Franciscan scenes. This card was never mailed and survives in excellent unused condition, the linen texture and colors as vivid as the day it was printed.
