Postcard Esplanade Gardens Ryde Isle of Wight 1952 Posted KGV Stamps

Ryde, Isle of Wight, England1952LinenFair-Good

Flower beds bursting with summer colour frame an ornate stone fountain at the Esplanade Gardens in Ryde, Isle of Wight — the town's elegant seafront pleasure grounds, here bathed in the saturated hues of a hand-tinted linen-era print, with the distant glint of the Solent just visible through the flagpole promenade on a perfect August day. This card was posted on 10 August 1952 from Ryde's Isle of Wight sorting office, carrying two King George VI 1d blue stamps — among the last of their issue, as the King had died just six months earlier in February 1952 and the new Elizabethan definitives were not yet in circulation. The message, written to Miss McCormick at Northfield, Birmingham, describes "very charming" weather and mentions having "all [been] tired out" — a perfectly British holiday postcard sentiment. Publisher number 119 appears lower left.
