A lush aerial panorama of the Banks o' Doon in Alloway, Ayrshire, Scotland unfolds in rich hand-tinted colour — the ancient stone arch of the Brig o' Doon curves gracefully over the dark River Doon as strolling visitors in Edwardian dress dot the riverside garden walks below red-roofed pavilions, all set against rolling emerald hills. This is the very landscape immortalised by Robert Burns in "Tam o' Shanter," and the site drew literary pilgrims from across the English-speaking world in the early twentieth century; the formal gardens visible here were part of the Burns Monument grounds, opened to the public as a shrine to Scotland's national poet. The card was produced under Valentine's prestigious "Valesque" registered process, a high-quality collotype-based colour printing method that set the Dundee firm apart from cheaper rivals of the era.
